To say this past week was a whirlwind would be an understatement! From the districts we work with shutting down, to the Bay Area-wide shelter in place, COVID-19 has completely turned our lives upside down.
During this crazy time, one thing has remained consistent: the 49ers Academy is committed to doing whatever it takes to support our students, families, and staff. Although we have been forced to shelter in place and close our school site offices, our team is working harder than ever to meet the growing needs of our students and families. Our goal during the COVID-19 crisis is to provide students and families with the immediate additional support they require to meet their most basic needs.
Our team has been working nonstop to personally connect with each and every student and family we work with to assess their individual situations and make a plan for support. Through our COVID-19 Emergency Fund, we have already distributed over $10,000 in grocery store gift cards to our most vulnerable families. We have also connected many families to other community services that can help with food, housing, and legal issues.
In addition, our case managers are continuing their work to provide academic support through Google Hangouts and Zoom meetings with our students. We have set up a schedule for virtual office hours and are helping our students get set up for distance learning and ensuring they have everything they require during this chaotic time. Most importantly, we will give students much needed emotional support and stability during this crisis.
It is because of caring people, like you, that weâve been able to move so quickly to meet the needs of our community. In just one week, you helped raise $40,000 (and counting!)! It warms our heart to know that in such a stressful and tumultuous time, people are more compassionate and generous than ever. You truly care about others in your community and we are so grateful.
We cannot predict what will happen in the next few weeks, but we are absolute in our commitment to doing whatever it takes to help our students and their families navigate through this crisis.
This is an interesting and unprecedented time for everyone. As part of the 49ers Academy family, we worry about you as well. Please reach out and let us know how you are doing.
Stay safe, healthy and make sure to wash those hands!
With Appreciation,
Michele Sharkey
San Francisco 49ers Academy Executive Director
