Because of Community Learning Hubs, the Cesar Chavez Ravenswood Middle School campus is bubbling with life! Thereâs laughter outside as students hang out during recess. Thereâs hope in studentsâ eyes as they are reconnected with peers and mentors. You can feel the enthusiasm and excitement in the air.
In partnership with the Ravenswood City School District, we opened our Community Learning Hubs last September. Jose Santana, Middle School Program Caseworker, helped make the Hubs into a reality. He knew that this was something our students and their families needed.
âThe students are happy to be here. They crave interaction with other humans. Iâm just blessed to help facilitate a program like this.â
We currently operate eight Hubs, limited to 8 students in each. They have been a lifeline to many students and their families. The Hubs are a safe, tech-connected space where students can engage with their distance learning.
We offer virtual tutoring sessions three days a week. In partnership with Stanford and Elevate Tutoring, this academic support has been critical to keeping students on track in school. Students also have access to three daily meals and have time to socialize with their peers.
Hereâs what a typical day looks like for Jose at the Hubs:
7:45am- Jose arrives at Cesar Chavez Ravenswood Middle School ready for the day. He sets up and sanitizes materials. Safety has been a high priority for staff and students. Jose goes above and beyond to ensure that the Hubs follow the proper protocols and guidelines to keep everyone safe.
8:15am- Students begin to arrive on campus ready to learn. Since starting the Hubs, Jose has seen a significant change in many of the students. He celebrates the small, daily wins that are building studentsâ confidence. Their cameras are on. Theyâre more willing to participate. Teachers are commenting on the change theyâre seeing. Some students are even earning awards.
12:00pm- Jose spends the rest of the day wearing multiple hats. He makes sure the Community Learning Hubs are running smoothly and checks in with over 20 students on his caseload. He also spends time with students during their breaks, making sure young people know that they are seen and cared for.
âFamilies in our community were struggling. Parents keep telling me how grateful they are to have their students come to school every day. Some of our kids were stuck at home for five to six months. They were depressed. Now, theyâre starting to build relationships with their classmates. Their spirits are lifting.â - Jose Santana
The Community Learning Hubs have been a bright spot this past year. They are possible because of your compassion and generous support. Thank you, as always, for being part of the 49ers Academy family. We are so grateful for you!
